Generative AI Policies
1. Purpose and Scope
Jurnal Manajemen Retail Indonesia (JMARI) recognizes the development of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI) and its potential to support research and scholarly writing. JMARI permits the limited and responsible use of Generative AI tools, provided that such use does not compromise academic integrity, originality, scientific validity, or publication transparency. This policy applies to all authors, editors, and peer reviewers involved in the JMARI publication process.
2. Use of Generative AI by Authors
Authors may use Generative AI tools to support activities related to scholarly writing, including:
- Improving grammar, spelling, language style, and readability.
- Translation and language editing.
- Developing preliminary outlines, exploring ideas, and summarizing materials as writing assistance.
- Providing technical assistance with programming, data processing, or visualization, provided that the resulting outputs are appropriately verified.
Authors remain fully responsible for the entire content of their manuscripts, including factual accuracy, data validity, originality of analysis, citation accuracy, and research conclusions.
3. Disclosure of Generative AI Use
Authors must disclose the use of Generative AI when such technology is used to generate or develop substantive manuscript content, including text, analysis, interpretation, or other scholarly materials.
The disclosure should identify the tool or system used, the purpose of its use, and the relevant sections or stages of the work supported by AI. The disclosure may be included in a dedicated section entitled Declaration of Generative AI Use, or in another section specified by the editor.
Limited use of AI for basic grammar correction, spelling, or routine mechanical editing does not necessarily require disclosure, unless required by the journal's applicable rules or publisher policies.
4. Prohibited Uses and Limitations
Authors must not:
- Submit AI-generated text, data, references, images, or analytical results without adequate review and verification.
- Use fabricated or unverified references, quotations, DOIs, or scholarly sources.
- Use AI to fabricate, falsify, or manipulate research data or findings.
- Present AI-generated outputs as empirical findings, intellectual contributions, or original research results without a legitimate evidential basis.
- Use AI in ways that violate copyright, privacy, confidentiality, or research ethics.
Generative AI tools cannot be listed as authors or co-authors because they cannot assume academic and legal responsibility for published content.
5. Responsibilities of Editors and Peer Reviewers
Editors and peer reviewers may use AI tools to support appropriate administrative or technical tasks, subject to the journal's policies. However, editorial decisions, scholarly evaluations, and recommendations to accept or reject manuscripts must remain based on human professional judgment.
Editors and peer reviewers must not upload unpublished manuscripts, author data, or confidential peer-review information to external AI tools when doing so could breach confidentiality, data protection requirements, or journal policies.
Any use of AI must preserve independent judgment, manuscript confidentiality, and the integrity of the peer-review process.
6. Policy Compliance and Enforcement
JMARI reserves the right to request clarification or additional disclosure regarding Generative AI use when necessary. Suspected violations will be handled in accordance with the principles of fairness, proportionality, and the applicable publication ethics procedures.
Depending on the nature and severity of a violation, actions may include a request for revision, manuscript rejection, publication correction, or other editorial measures consistent with the journal's policies.
The use of AI alone does not automatically constitute grounds for manuscript rejection. Decisions should take into account transparency, accuracy, originality, and compliance with publication ethics.
7. Final Declaration
By submitting a manuscript to JMARI, authors confirm that the manuscript has been reviewed and verified in its entirety and that any use of Generative AI has been conducted responsibly in accordance with this policy. Authors retain full responsibility for the integrity and originality of their published work.
